The Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, WI is a wonderful place to visit if you like wine. It is a great way to rediscover old favorites, and find new wines to enjoy. When visiting friends during our road trip last July, our friend took us to visit the winery. It was a great way to spend an afternoon catching up and enjoy some samples of wine.
The setting is absolutely breathtaking, and looks like it should be in a movie. The trees are beautiful, and walking under them during the summer is cool and refreshing. The main building catches your eye almost immediately, and beckons you to come on in and look around.
Don’t these pictures make you want to pull up a chair, grab a glass of wine, and just relax? I know that I really wanted to, but there was a lot more to see at the winery. On our way up to the main building, we passed some of the vineyards. Of course I had to take some pictures of them just because they were so amazing.
Once we got through the beauty of the surrounding area, we went inside to look around. It was really wonderful to see all the different wines that were available. And I participated in my first wine tasting. Yeah, at age 39 I finally did a wine tasting, even though we live pretty close to some nice wineries here in PA. I always enjoyed a glass of wine every now and then, but I never went to a winery for a tasting. What was neat was they had 2 different types of tastings: one red and one white. I had to try both.
I always thought I was a red wine lover because I like the sweeter wines. But after trying both types of wine, I found that I enjoyed white wine as well. They were the sweeter ones, although I did find that I really enjoyed the Dry Reisling. I also had the opportunity to try some port, which had a different flavor that I was not used to. The port was aged 20+ years, and you could definitely taste all the different flavors in it. All and all, wine tasting was a great experience that I look forward to repeating this year when we visit in 2 weeks.
Once the tasting was completed, we took some time and did some shopping. That took quite a bit of time because of my new found love for white wines. Who knew it takes a lot of thought in deciding what wine to purchase. My previous wine knowledge consisted of Lambrusco and Zinfandel. My husband found out that he liked some different ones as well, although he only had small sips because he was driving(He was able to enjoy a full glass once we were back home, and he totally agreed with all my choices). After a few more strolls around the winery shop, we finally made some firm decisions and made our purchases. This day trip was definitely worth the time, even if you don’t drink. The winery grounds are enough to keep you there for hours.
Have you ever been to a winery? Did a wine tasting? Or do you hope to try it in the future?
