School is almost ending, and for most students that means sleeping in and doing nothing. But for a few lucky students, the beginning of Summer means the start of a school session as well. My soon-to-be freshman son in that situation. Before I send him though, I want him to be able to take care of himself since we will be 3 hours away. Here are 4 household skills every college student should learn before heading off to the next part of their journey in life.
Most kids may not have to help out around the house for reasons that are individual to their family. When it is time to leave for college, they often struggle with doing simple household skills that come with living on their own. While generally most dorms take care of the major items, there are still 4 household skills every college student should learn to do before they head off to the real world.
So, I decided to take some time with my oldest son and review a few important things. We hopped in the car and headed to our local Weis Market for a quick lesson in shopping and saving money.
My oldest son is a huge help around the house, and I am really going to miss him when he heads off to school. He is the one that will usually help with the household chores when I ask him to. But sometimes I forget and assume he already knows how to do things.
Yeah, we all know what you say about assuming….
But in any case, read on to see what things we discussed.
4 Household Skills Every College Student Should Learn:
When you first read the list, you may think it is obvious that kids should already be doing these things, but you would be surprised how many just don’t know.
- Purchase and replace the paper towels. I am sure many parents can relate to this situation. There is nothing as frustrating as reaching for a paper towel and there are none. Teach them early. And teach them to shop wisely for quality brands.
- Choose the correct dishwashing detergent. Not all brands are created equal. Show them by using the correct detergent, they can save them time and money because these items will only need to be washed one time!
- Always have Dawn liquid in your cabinet. These is my favorite household item. From washing dishes to getting grease out to saving wildlife, Dawn does it all! This is also a great time to review the proper way to handwash dishes.
- Pick your proper laundry detergent. This is a great time to talk about the proper laundry detergents and how to use them. With brands like Tide, less is definitely more. And shopping at Weis Markets can help your student save money as well as time. Bonus!
