Okay, here is the thing. I normally avoid controversial topics on my blog because I am in the mindset that I want to please everyone. I want to be all happy and upbeat, and want to appear like Susie Sunshine. You know, sunshine and rainbows, ice cream and sprinkles. And talking about religion? I generally avoid it with a ten-foot pole.
You know what? It sucks sometimes.
No seriously, who is really like that? Don’t get me wrong, I like to be happy. I strive to be happy. I want everyone else to be happy. But sometimes, things get my panties in a bunch. Today is one of those days. Why? Because I had an encounter with one of those people I want to strangle. With two hands. For a long time.
Why Being A Christian Sucks Sometimes
I work in a bookstore, and I deal with all sorts of people. Nice people, grumpy people, and inpatient people. That is just the way things are. I try not to let them get to me because, let’s face it, dealing with these people are part of my job. Suck it up buttercup, is what I tell myself most days. So anyway, this was my panty-bunching experience today.
Unidentified Customer: “Can you help me find this book…”
Me: “Sure! Do you have a title or an author?”
UC: “Umm, I think so. The title has something Yourself in the title. And I think the author is..well it starts with a T”
Me: “Well, I need a little more to go on”
UC: “Well, lady, it is your job to help me figure it out”
Me: “I know, I am just trying to narrow it down. What is it about?”
UC: “It’s a Christian book”
Me: “Ok! That helps a lot. I think I know which one you are talking about.”
UC: “Oh, are you familiar with it?”
Me: “Yes, I enjoyed it. This is the title and author. But I don’t have it in the store, can I order it for you?”
UC: “What? What do you mean you don’t have it? What kind of place is this?”
Me: “I am sorry, it is an older title, so we don’t keep it in the store”
UC: “Are you a Christian?”
Me: “Well yes”
UC: “Well you are not acting like it. You won’t help me with what I need. Remember lady, God sees everything, and He would not be happy with you”
Me: Calls manager and walks away before I say something that is really not-Christian like.
The purpose of this whole post? I am tired of all these people thinking that they have a free pass in life just because they say they are “Christian”. They say mean stuff, and then hide behind God and claim that is what God wants. That is such freaking crap.
- Being a Christian does not mean be a condescending @#!hole. It is times like this that makes me ashamed to admit that I am a Christian. Because people like my unidentified customer give the whole term a bad name, and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Being a Christian doesn’t mean that you should shove your beliefs down someone else’s throat because it should be the only viewpoint.
- Being a Christian doesn’t mean you should tell someone that they are going to Hell because they don’t wear skirts or stay-at-home or wear head coverings. Really, I have had that happen to me on some online message boards. And it’s my husband’s fault that I work outside the home because he is not following God’s word. Really? These ladies should be ashamed of themselves. If it wasn’t for me or other women that worked outside the home they wouldn’t be able to do half the *@#! they do because there would not be any midwives or grocery store clerks or female gynecologists.
- Being a Christian doesn’t mean that you should chastise someone for wearing jeans to church. As far as I am concerned, being at church is more important than what you are wearing(except if you are showing breasts or your butt-crack is hanging out). God is pleased that you are there. Wearing a skirt to church doesn’t make you a Christian. Again, attitudes like this suck.
Normally I am not so pessimistic about religion. I do believe that God forgives sins(He knows I have had plenty of those), I do believe that my ticket to Heaven is believing in Him. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of people out there that do make being a Christian an appealing thing. I can point the finger at myself sometimes that I am not always a nice person or have some very not-so-nice thoughts about people. What I can’t stand is this, if I have to be a total jerk to be considered a Christian, then forget it. I’ll just become atheist.
So Am I Wrong For Feeling This Way? Do You Think Being A Christian Gives You A Free Pass To Be Mean To Those Around You?
