Okay, time for me to crawl up on my soap box, and go off on my latest pet peeve. Retail has destroyed the Christmas holiday. Seriously, and not just the retail sector. Everywhere I go on Facebook, everyone has Christmas countdown posts on their pages. It makes me want to barf. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Christmas holiday as much as everyone else. But is it really necessary to start it in October? I am just getting to enjoy my pumpkin recipes and apple cider. I don’t want Christmas crammed down my throat.
It is so annoying to be walking through a store in the mall, and you run into a table that has been set up with Christmas cards, before Halloween. Honestly, I know people want to get a head start on the holiday season, but this is getting ridiculous. I want to be able to stroll through the store and admire the fall decorations. But what do I see? Christmas wrapping paper and gift bags.
Bah, Humbug. Yeah, I am channeling my inner Scrooge. Apparently it isn’t just me.
The Christmas holiday is no longer that. It has turned into a commercialized mess that I want to forget sometimes. Yes, there are parts of Christmas that I love. But that doesn’t start till the day after Thanksgiving in my Google Calendar. I want to enjoy harvest and Thanksgiving and the changing of the leaves before I have to say Ho-Ho-Ho every other minute.
I’m a mean one, Mrs. Grinch. I better watch out, the Christmas police will be coming after me soon.
But before they take me away, let me share a few other things that I abhor about the Christmas holiday starting before Thanksgiving.
- Falling over trees that are being set up. I have enough trouble setting my own up. Trying to navigate a department store where the aisles are blocked by Christmas decorations is not fun. So what do I do? Avoid it.
- Hearing Christmas carols from now until the end of January. I love my Christmas music, but again, not until Thanksgiving is over. I get so sick of hearing them that by the time Christmas rolls around, I just want to shove cotton in my ears and curl up in the fetal position until it’s over.
- The focus on buying, buying, buying. Society puts so much emphasis on the commercialism, it is no wonder our kids have the gimme mentality.
- See the first bullet.
I always thought that the Christmas holiday season was supposed to be just that: a season. Not a 6-month season, not even a 3-month season. I feel like it isn’t even special anymore. And that is sad.
I promise you that I am not always this grumpy about the Christmas holiday season. In fact, I will even prove that to you soon. I do have a post planned where I will share about all the things I love about the season. But you won’t see it till after Black Friday.
What don’t you like about the Christmas holiday season starting so early?
