Exploring New York City is an exciting thing to do with your family, especially during the holiday season. The energy is amazing, the decorations are breathtaking, and it is just plain fun. This is the second year we have gone, both times as a fundraiser for school. My kids are in Science Olympiad, and this trip raises funds for competitions. We get to see the city, and they get needed funding. Total win-win situation.
Exploring New York City.
We took a chartered bus up to the city, which I am grateful for. Traffic is madness. I could never drive in a big city. The only thing I didn’t like about the ride was going through the Lincoln Tunnel. I am not claustrophobic, but it seemed like we were in there forever!
We had a great driver, who navigated the city without problem. Once we were dropped off, the first thing we did was grab lunch. Last year when we were exploring New York City, we had no idea what we were doing or where we were going. This year was different. After a short walk that was not 20 blocks out-of-the-way, we arrived at our destination. John’s Pizzeria was our #1 place to eat lunch.
There is nothing like authentic New York style pizza. It is a very busy place. We got there right before the pre-show lunch rush. Phantom of the Opera is directly across the street, so most ticket holders eat here.
Next on our agenda was exploring Rockefeller Center. My kids make fun of me because seeing the tree was high on my list.
Well, I could have really made fun of them because there was only one place they wanted to go. If you have ever been to New York City before with boys, you may know where I am talking about. Nintendo World, of course. Every kids dream.
Okay, I admit, it is a fun place to be. I wish hubby could have enjoyed it more. He was starting to feel sick from a sinus infection. Not a fun thing when you are spending all day walking in the cold.
After visiting Nintendo World, we headed up to check out F.A.O Schwartz. Last year, we didn’t have time to walk that far, and I was disappointed. My kids may not be little anymore, but I still wanted to see it. It was kind of overwhelming, and very hot! But definitely worth it, despite the 10 minute wait to get in.
I had to drag hubby out of the Star Wars section. And the boys out of the Lego area. Men!
The last thing we wanted to do was go back to a favorite place we found when exploring New York City. Crumbs Bake Shop! I don’t need to describe it, the pictures will do all the talking!
Seriously, between the pumpkin cupcake, peanut butter cupcake, and the apple pastry, I gained 10 pounds. And we took a 6-pack home, too. But we shared them, honest!
After that it was time to head to meet the bus, so we could head to Little Italy for supper.
Our bus pick-up point was right near Radio City Music Hall. Taking pictures of it never gets old.
After that, we headed to Little Italy for dinner. It is such a quaint place to visit, but the real gem is the food. By then we were freezing, so sitting down to eat was a treat. After choosing a restaurant that served lasagna, we really enjoyed sitting down and relaxing. At that point, I was ready to fall asleep. Before we walked back to the bus, I had to take in the great holiday decorations.
So that is the fun we had exploring New York City. Despite the cold, and hubby not feeling well, it was a great family trip. Looking forward to going back next year. Have you ever been to New York City? What are some of your favorite places to visit?
