Okay, let me preface this by saying that my title doesn’t imply that I don’t have any clean dishes. In fact, quite the opposite for a change. That is a miracle.
Normally, I only get crazy about cleaning the kitchen when our friends come to visit from Ohio. Why? I don’t want them to know that I am a total slob when it comes to my kitchen. And doing the dishes. And scrubbing the floor. Oh boy am I throwing myself under the bus here.
This is an older picture of our kitchen right after we papered it. Look, we still had dial-up internet!!
But seriously. Do we really need clean dishes? Or any dishes? If it was up to me, I would just eat straight out of the baking dish with a fork, and skip the middle mess. Then it is just one dish and 4 utensils. Just kidding, I would never do that. Really, I wouldn’t.
Which brings me back to my original train of thought. Last weekend, my best friend and her family came out for a visit. Between my family and hers, we had nine people in the house. Would you believe that we used up every single dish at one point? Now, even though there are only 4 of us living in this house, I have tons of dishes. Big plates, small plates, bowls, and more. And we used them all.
So tell me what you consider proper. Sandy told me she would have been perfectly okay using paper plates and such. Which, I think, is fine when we have a party with all kinds of people here. In fact, it is what most people expect. But when it is just a regular visit? I think it is perfectly fine using our regular dishes because it is just our families.
Makes perfect sense, right? Right?
Which, again, brings me back to my original point. Do we really need clean dishes? Why yes, yes we do! Not because we have to, because we want to. Because we always want it to be like family, not just a visit. Yes, it is a bit more work, but who cares.
